People concerned about hospital cleanliness in the U.K. are being urged to challenge health workers on whether they have washed their hands.

Andrew Pike, chief executive of South East Essex Primary Care Trust, said,
"We would encourage people using health services to question any healthcare worker, whether in hospital or the community, if they have washed their hands."

I am in and out of hospitals, in the US, and if I question a health care worker about handwashing invariably they get angry. A nurse attempted to start an I.V. without washing her hands, without gloving and without cleansing my arm and I asked her to please not start my I.V. unless she had done so and she got angry and stomped out of my room and another nurse came in (with the fingers of her glove cut off) and spoke rudely to me. I gave up and let her start my I.V. This type of thing happens over and over. So, some people say they actually like it when a patient points out hand washing. I don't believe it.
