Italian authorities have seized some 500 tons of bad seafood and shellfish believed to be largely destined for New Year's Eve dinner parties.

Agriculture Minister Luca Zaia said Wednesday that worms were found in some of the fish seized across Italy between Dec. 10-23. In other cases, mussels defrosted months earlier were passed off as fresh, and fish coming from Asia was passed off as domestic.

Zaia described the food as "garbage" including brine jellyfish, and said organized crime was likely behind it.

The Times Union reports the Rensselaer County Health Department closed a spring Friday after six people became sick with "beaver fever” after drinking water obtained from the site.

Residents are advised not to drink water from a spring located one-quarter mile north of the intersection of routes 22 and 43.

The intestinal illness is caused by a microscopic parasite called Giardia lamblia.

Someone came to the blog this morning searching “Salmonella Saintpaul flatulence” inspiring this post. As of last night 138 people in 11 states were sick from Salmonella in tomatoes.

According to http://www.about-salmonella.com/salmonella_symptoms_risks, Salmonella can cause gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, and bacteremia. The following are symptoms of Salmonella gastroenteritis:
    • diarrhea
    • abdominal cramps
    • fever, generally 100°F to 102°F (38°C to 39°C)
    • nausea, and/or
    • vomiting
In mild cases diarrhea may be non-bloody, occur several times per day, and not be very voluminous; in severe cases it may be frequent, bloody and/or mucoid, and of high volume. Vomiting is less common than diarrhea.

    Other frequently reported symptoms are
    • headaches
    • muscle pain, and
    • joint pain
Whereas the diarrhea typically lasts 24 to 72 hours, patients often report fatigue and other nonspecific symptoms lasting 7 days or longer.

The FDA has a thorough analysis of Salmonella in their Bad Bug Book.

The Nassau County Department of Health and Mama Sbarro's pizzeria, 265 Broadway in Hicksville, N.Y., said Saturday that a kitchen worker at the restaurant had contracted typhoid fever, putting more than 100 customers who ate at the restaurant on March 14-16 at "low" risk (photo by Newsday).

The department emphasized that Mama Sbarro's had passed two inspections since Friday evening, when the county was informed of the kitchen worker's condition. The restaurant, which did not know the employee had typhoid fever until Saturday, had no major health violations in the last two years and would remain open, authorities said, because it was safe to eat there.

Authorities noted the disease may have been passed to the kitchen worker from relatives visiting from overseas, though they would not say from what country or when the relatives visited.

Typhoid fever is an acute illness associated with fever caused by Salmonella typhi. Medicinenet.com reports that less than 500 cases are reported annually in the United States, mostly in people who recently have traveled to endemic areas.

Like hepatitis A, typhoid fever passes through the bowel and can remain on hands after inadequate handwashing, potentially contaminating foods like salads, or pizza.

    Don't eat poop.
