Tainted lettuce to blame for E. coli outbreak

In a piece about imported foods in America, Elizabeth Weise from USA Today quotes me as saying,
 
"Whether your food comes from down the street or around the globe, you want to verify that producers and processors are actually doing what they are supposed to be doing."


That's the same point I made yesterday at the International Association for Food Protection annual meeting in a talk about organics and food safety, and a point that unfortunately has been borne out in Alabama.

WHNT 19 reported last night that lettuce supplied to local restaurants by Quillin Produce in Huntsville is the source of an E. coli O157 outbreak that has sickened 15 people, including three who are in critical condition in hospitals. The original source of the lettuce was not identified.
