Farmer's vomit sickens 54 bystanders at hospital

Posted: May 23rd, 2008 - 8:59am by Doug Powell

Police and hospital officials said 54 people were sickened at a Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital in Kumamoto, Japan, after inhaling toxic gas from the vomit of a 34-year-old farmer who had apparently swallowed an agricultural chemical to kill himself.

He vomited while undergoing treatment, generating toxic chlorine gas.

A total of 54 people near him, including doctors and patients, fell ill. Of them, 10 were admitted to hospitals including the Red Cross Hospital, while the 44 others who were not in serious condition are steadily recovering.

If you're going to off yourself, try not to involve involve others.

That photo was completely unnecessary. Do you have no idea that people with emetophobia read your site? We are very interested in learning to prevent vomiting but many of us are very afraid of seeing photos like that.I just yesterday shared the URL of your site with the world's largest community of emetophobes, but now after seeing that on their first visit, I think many of them will not be coming back to the Barfblog. That story also has nothing to do with food safety and is just a bizarre story about the hazards of chemicals.

Hi. I read the various comments about my barfblog.com athttp://www.emetophobia.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14401&PN=1Foodborne illness is serious stuf; 30 per cent of the population in all so-called developed countries will suffer from food and waterborne illness each and every year. Thousands will die.Conventional messages seem to have no effect, and the Centers for Disease Control said as much earlier this year. So, I apologize if the graphic picture caused offense. We're trying to get the attention of a generation that wonders whether Brittney or Lindsay or Paris is wearing underwear, moreso than what's on their hands they're using to make your lunch. Thanks for noticing us. Your points are appreciated.dpDr. Douglas Powellassociate professorscientific directorInternational Food Safety Network (iFSN)dept. diagnostic medicine/pathobiologyKansas State UniversityManhattan, KS66506cell: 785-317-0560fax: 785-532-4039dpowell@ksu.eduhttp://www.foodsafety.ksu.edudonteatpoop.combarfblog.comyoutube.com/SafeFoodCafe

Hahaha, that picture kicks ass. Emetophobic pussies afraid of a little flooding. I think this site needs some sound effects in the background for the complete vomit experience.

Oh, no way... You're the professor that discovered if you wash your hands after using the bathroom or being around sick people you won't get sick?! Big ups!Respect.

Although I agree that picture will be shocking to emetophobia sufferers. I believe that Dr Powell cannot possibly think about whether a picture will offend certain groups of people before making a post. However, maybe a warning of a vomit graphic could be posted at the top of this post for any emetophobes wandering across this page. Or possibly placing photos of this nature below the fold with a warning sign above the fold to warn emetophobics of the content. Just a thought.
