Super foods, super expensive

I read this story yesterday

…many super foods like blueberries are popular because they allow you to enjoy health benefits without skimping on taste. They're not alone: Super food lists widely vary, but here's a list of 10 that show up on many nutritionists' lists and on various Web sites.

The list included: acai, salmon, swiss chard, cherries, green tea, walnuts, blueberries, kefir, brown rice, ground flax seed. Varied ingredients with a common goal – to make you super healthy.

I quickly pulled my shopping list and added a few of those.

I spotted the blueberries – (yes!) - $6 for 2 lb. No way. I’ll stay with strawberries, they are probably almost as healthy anyways.

Walnuts were almost $10 a pack. I’m a college student, I can’t afford a $10 pack of nuts.

I chose the salmon fillets at the fish section, then saw the tilapia filets. It was $8 for salmon vs $3 for tilapia. Guess who won.

I ended up with only two items of my super food list: green tea and brown rice (which was actually a bit more expensive than regular, but bearable).

I guess it was super food, not super cheap. Sorry to find out I can’t afford being super healthy.

Bryan Severns says:

On the expense of Super FoodsIf you are correct in your info, $6.00 fo 2# of blue berries is a great price. The nutrition in the blues is better than the strawberries, and the flavor is probably better too. Those walnuts? That pack, if used correctly should give health benefits for many meals as a couple of oz of nuts goes a long way. As a poor college student, you would be better off spending your food dollars on quality, as your health will improve (and your satisfaction in your meals).

acai berry users says:

Yeah it's amazing how expensive these "super foods" can get. And the more exotic or foreign the more expensive it gets!I also think a lot of this depends on where you buy the food from. If I was to buy 2 lbs of blue berries I wouldn't pay $6 I would pay much less. So I just think a lot comes down to where you buy it at, how foreign it is to the region, and I'm sure their marketing efforts set the price for them as well. All in all. EXCELLENT post! Keep it up.

i don't wanna die from something you can only see in a micro says:

I'm amazed you ever leave your house! What happened to challenging nature to bolster your immune system? The only thig I worry about in the woods are the things you are supposed to worry about. Big carnivores with great big teeth and a taste for flesh. "oh no i may have some bacteria on my hands!!!" while you wash your hands with scented wipes a bear is creeping up behind your ass and thinking "oh lavender scented human for tea tonight! It just doesn't get better! RAAAAAAAAAAW!"Dear mom, I'm alive and writing to you with only one hand. The other was eaten by a bear. But don't worry the hand is clean and smells lovely. You can rest assured that this letter reaches you without infection, I managed to save my anti bacterial wipes by distracting the bear with my protruding liver. (he'll probably die from the poisons it was proccessing anyway) My only hope is that the bear does not get an infection from any dirt that may have been under my fingernails. If you can write back from inside your sterile bubble, I would love to read your cautionary words with my one remaining eye.sincerley, Mayra. I won't put kisses 'cos you may have cooties.
