How many food poisoners can you spot on this list?

As Eddie Murphy said in the movie, 48 Hours, “A badge and a gun goes a long way. … There’s a new sheriff in town.”

That’s the impression the Obama Administration is trying to project with a spate of announcements to enhance food safety, which makes me feel it’s 1994 all over again … and look, there’s Michael Taylor back as a food safety advisor at the Food and Drug Administration (good choice, BTW).

For all the various announcements and endorsements today, the list of invitees to the White House is the most telling. How many food poisoners can you spot on this list, the ones who profit from selling food, have proven themselves incapable of providing safe food, and now have to ask for a babysitter?

The people who sell food for profit are a whole heck of a lot more important to the well being of this nation than you, me, or any of the regulatory agencies assigned to deal with them. If you had to make the choice as to whether or not to get rid of the FDA, USDA, etc., or whether to get rid of the people who produce, distribute, and sell food, you'd do well to get rid of the FDA, USDA, etc. And, you know what? You'd probably still have low risk food.And, yes, we have a low risk food supply. The only way to entirely eliminate the risk of foodborne illness is to succeed in outlawing eating. But we keep obsessing on trying to reduce the already miniscule risk of foodborne illness per consumption to be slightly more miniscule.The idea that we don't have a "safe" food supply, by any reasonable definition of "safe," is absurd; as is the idea that there's some kind of crisis in food safety. Yes, low risk can translate into what seems to be a large absolute number of illnesses because billions of "trials" (meals) are consumed every day. But the risk is low. No given consumer has to live in fear that their next meal is going to make them ill; except that the sensationalism that surrounds the inevitable illnesses and outbreaks that do occur may cause them to have an exaggerated impression of the risk.Nothing regulatory agencies do is going to create a situation where there aren't foodborne outbreaks. Not going to happen. Not unless, again, somebody plans to outlaw eating.
