Burger King outs baby for 'no shoes' rule

No shirt, no shoes, no service, baby!

According to KSHB-TV, the manager of a Burger King near St. Louis, Missouri, told Jennifer Frederich she would have to get her food to go because her daughter, Kaylin, wasn’t wearing any shoes.

"She doesn’t own shoes. She’s only six months old,” said Frederich after the manager explained that feet without shoes were against the health code, and, no, socks would not suffice.

“She doesn’t walk, so she’s not touching the ground," Frederich continued, "There is no reason for her to have shoes on.”

While the manager's apparent commitment to the health code was admirable, the misplaced emphasis suggests it was not a product of a culture of food safety.

"In fact," the Associated Press later reported, "shoelessness is not a health code violation in St. Louis County."

A statement by Burger King, cited by the AP, says the owner of that particular franchise "apologizes for this guest's experience...The franchisee is retraining his restaurant team on the proper use of the 'no shoes' policy."

The franchise owner also contacted Frederich to apologize in person.

Just so you know Burger King is going to end up losing a lot of business from the bullsh** about the baby getting kicked out of the restaurant for no shoes! If I were any one of those people who were traveling with her I Would have demanded my money back and called the local television station! I will not set foot in A burger king now! I don't go to places that don't allow strollers or bare foot babies! I'd understand if she was walking but she wasn't!

This really does smack of cluelessness on the manager's part. A lot of babies go around barefoot, and doctors recommend they be given the opportunity to learn to walk barefoot or in socks alone whenever possible. That said, I often did put socks and/or Robeez on my babies when we went out just to keep their tootsies warm and protect them from germs. But I certainly wasn't trying to protect the public from my kid's feet, ha ha! That's funny! However babies do love to pull socks and booties off their feet, so they usually didn't stay on long no matter how hard I tried. Anyway hopefully the BK employees now know that babies don't really need to be ejected from their restaurants when they're barefoot.

I was getting a sandwich in a late-night restaurant on Halloween night, the Red Dog Diner in Lethbridge. It was Halloween, and I had already taken my kids out earlier. Young adults in all kinds of costumes started coming in about midnight. One guy had some kind of vampire cape, and as he walked in someone apparently saw that he didn't have a shirt underneath the cape. The lady behind the grill started yelling no shirt, get out. He tucked it in and made sure the robe was closed. The still kicked him out anyway, with a considerable amount of yelling, and he stood in the cold waiting for the others. So the violation was that he didn't have clothes on under his clothes. Wow. Just, wow.
