Handwashing week should be every week

Washing your hands everyday, year round, regardless of the week is important, but since it is International Clean Hands Week, I am reminding all barfblog readers to wash their hands. It is essential to wash your hands before and after food preparation, after bathroom use, after coughing or sneezing, and once just because it’s International Clean Hands Week.

About 3 years ago I was stricken, literally, withh a severe case of ischemic colitis, very very very unpleasant, it did a good imitation of food poisoning I think. Anyway, during my (weak) week-long stay at the hospital hooked to all sorts of i.vs and so forth i found that one, it is difficult to wash hands with an i.v. needle jammed in the back of my hand and just when I needed to most as I was a frequent user of the facilities (to put it delicately). I also questioned (but appreciate how many times we are talking about) the practice of nurses etc using gloves and/or hand sanitizers in lieu of handwashing. I mean, if you use gloves then you have to use one ungloved hand to pull the last one off right? So am I paranoid or what. And I've read that hand sanitizers are no subtitute for washing. I realize and appreciate their hands may be raw from washing, stillll.....
