Fake veterinarian worked for USDA?

I was out with the family picking up some Chinese and wine last night and a woman waiting for her take-out said, “Oh, I’m glad to know you eat here.”

“Not usually, but it’s Chinese so everything’s cooked.”

She then introduced herself as a veterinary student at Kansas State University who’d seen me lecture a few weeks ago. And then she asked me if I’d seen the story about the fake U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarian.

I said, “Slipped my mind.”

I don’t see everything so if barfblogcom readers see anything of interest, please send along.

The student did, and it concerns a story that aired in Feb. 2010 in Atlanta.

WSB TV reported that a man used fraudulent credentials to land a job as a veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he worked in Atlanta-based food safety and inspection service for the past four years.

I don’t know how much of this is true or why the story didn’t get much national play – so judge for yourselves.

The story is completely true, only the news was able to report only a fraction of it. Though the story aired in Atlanta on 2/10, most of it was filmed in 8/09. Today is March 11, and there still has not been a single charge filed against the imposter veterinarian. Additionally, the 45 real PVHs whom he trained and supervised have not been assessed for proper training. None of the facilities which are STILL operating under procedures implemented because of the imposter's "expert opinion" have been evaluated. There is still and inncredible risk to the public, and there has been no accountability. In the news story we're discussing, I am the gentleman who tried to report the imposter. What they did not emphasize is that, prior to having contacted the media, I tried for MONTHS to get anyone in a position of authority at the local, regional, and national levels to let me hand them a pile of evidence that would prove to them beyond any doubt that their DVMS had never attended ANY veterinary school, and that he was using the identity of a real veterinarian by the same first and last name. Not only did they refuse to listen to me, but they also questioned MY motives for "trying to cause Dr. Holt trouble." The management at the Atlanta FSIS then took the liberty of telling the imposter that I had called several times, which potentially put my life at risk in a very literal sense. I'm normally not a big fan of the media at large, but I am grateful for them in this case. They MADE the government listen and stop protecting one of their "favorites." If you listen closely to the news story, you'll hear that Tim had been fired from several jobs in the private sector for inadequate skills and questionable credentials prior to having been hired by the FSIS. What they don't report is that the job he had just prior to his 4 year stint at FSIS was with Hill Pet Foods. Unbelievable to me that a fraud veterinarian who was fired from a DOG FOOD company was hired as the District Veterinary Medical Officer covering 3 states worth of Human food facilities, and that he was promoted, made a trainer, etc. If you really want to boil over, visit www.whistleblower.org and read last week's press release from PHV Dr. Dean Wyatt, who currently works for FSIS, but in a different region. He was met with the same reaction when he tried to raise concerns internally as I was externally as a consumer, taxpayer and citizen. This is not a local or regional problem. It is systemic within the Department of Agriculture, and probably even higher than that. Fortunately, there are now some people listening. I spent the last several days in D.C., and I'm relieved to report that there some people who are much more influential than me who are now asking questions and demanding accountability, including Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Thanks for letting me rant! Its been a bit of a tough year on this end.
