Nosestretcher alert: Grass-fed beef not free from E. coli O157

Food porn is everywhere – and can be bad for public health.

ABC2 in Baltimore, Maryland ran a piece yesterday about a “quick, easy and healthy meal that won’t break the bank” and quoted certified nutritionist and personal trainer, Christi Christiaens, as saying “grass fed beef strongly reduces and sometimes eliminates the growth of harmful bacteria, like E-coli.”

No it doesn’t.

Dear Barfbloggers - I just want to say how much I enjoy your blog, even though I work in a field that has nothing to do with food safety. I live in California, where holier-than-thou attitudes toward food are everywhere - try convincing people here that raw milk is a health risk or that organic does not mean pathogen-free, and it's like you're insulting their mother. It's good to have something to read that arms me with facts. Keep it up.

I would have appreciated more detail here. I had a nagging feeling I had read (and believed) similar media reports before. I dug through the science literature to find the answer for myself. What I found is summarized nicely here: http://www.slate.com/id/2242290/ Doug is right, of course! It's really sad that misinformation persists.
