Rojak contaminated by raw seafood kills 2, sickens 150 in Singapore

The rojak served at Singapore’s Geylang Serai Temporary Market, which sickened more than 150 and killed two women, was cross-contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus from raw seafood, according to government investigators.

Rojak is a fruit and vegetable salad dish commonly found in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

In 1983, 34 people fell ill - also after eating at a Geylang Serai Indian-rojak stall, after drippings from raw cuttlefish fell into the rojak gravy, which was in uncovered containers on the lower shelves of a refrigerator.

The first LP I bought for myself as a teenager was Led Zepplin IV, a few years after it came out. My parents were fans of the Captain and Tennille.

I still have a number of bad songs I can recite verbatim from exposure as a kid: Petulia Clark’s Downtown, Burt Bacharach’s Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, and the Captain and Tennille’s Muskrat Love.

So I was filled with nostalgia today when Ki Keun Kim and colleagues at Pusan National University, South Korea, discovered that muskrat poop contains a potent antibiotic that can kill both Salmonella and Vibrio, common bacterial causes of foodborne illness.

Maybe the scientists were inspired by bad 1970s music.
 

Florida man dies from raw oysters

As I’ve said before, I’m not a fan of raw seafood.

Medical examiners in Florida say a Florida man who was a passenger and died suddenly following a high speed chase with police, had a deficient liver and was killed by Vibrio vulnificus in raw oysters he had eaten earlier.

Meanwhile, Mahogany clams served at Hinerwadel's Grove in North Syracuse, New York, have been found to contain two bacteria, including campylobacter. So far, 236 people have been sickened. The investigation continues.

Lobster on the lam; sicken 55 in Ontario, declared gross by FDA

Public health types in Hamilton, Ontario, report that 55 people fell ill after attending a staff barbecue July 18 at ArcelorMittal Dofasco or eating leftovers. A public health investigation determined the source of the outbreak was Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria from inadequately pre-cooked lobster tails.

The caterer was the Village Green Bistro in Westdale.

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers to avoid eating tomalley from American Lobster, regardless of where the lobster was harvested, because of potential contamination with dangerous levels of the toxins that cause Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP).

Lobster tomalley normally does not contain dangerous levels of PSP toxins. The current high levels of PSP toxins likely are associated with an ongoing red tide episode in northern New England and eastern Canada. Canadian authorities recommend limited consumption of lobster tomalley. However, authorities in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire have issued advisories cautioning against eating any tomalley.

Colbert did a bit about the tomalley Thrusday night but it’s not on the Comedy Central website yet. So this will have to do.
